Manual Pit Emptiers are the direct implementers of city-wide inclusive sanitation in communities around the world.  Since 2017, LSC has been dedicated to raising the profile and dignity of these essential workers.  We engage with them to understand how to better improve service delivery, especially when it comes to their safety. Pit emptying is a technical skill. In many countries, pit-emptying is not formalized in the job sector, which makes it difficult to regulate the services they provide.

The Manual Pit Emptiers Skills Competitions were created to put a spotlight on the essential nature of the work and celebrate these individuals that keep communities safe and healthy.

For the competitions, emptying professionals from around the world compete by showcasing their daily work on a simulated sanitation service-chain course, where every step of their process from collection to delivery is executed in the safest, most efficient manner. Teams of emptiers participate in skill-based scenarios of the various steps of the manual pit emptying process.  The teams are judged by a panel of experts and scored against a skills matrix.
